I owe everything I am and everything I will ever be to books. —Gary Paulsen

The literary world has lost another great writer with the passing of Gary Paulsen on Wednesday, October 13, 2021.

The celebrated author of more than 200 novels including Hatchet, The Winter Room, and Dogsong, Paulsen was a three-time Newbery Honor winner. Many of his books are coming-of-age tales set in the wilderness, adventure stories dealing with survival and perseverance.

Paulsen's own adventurous spirit led to his competing in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1983, an accomplishment that inspired memoirs Woodsong and Winterdance and led to a 2002 film adaptation called Snow Dogs.
