J.K. Rowling is releasing a new book! The beloved Harry Potter author announced her new children’s fairytale, The Ickabog, a story “about truth and the abuse of power,” on her website this morning.
Rowling wrote this story over a ten year span, in between writing the Harry Potter novels. She read it aloud to her own children and tucked it away in the attic, waiting for the perfect time to reappear. With children everywhere staying safer-at-home, Rowling decided now was the best time to release The Ickabog to the world.
Rowling teases that she will be “posting a chapter (or two, or three) every weekday between 26th May and 10th July on The Ickabog website.”
Maybe most exciting of all: your child’s illustrations could make it into the final book! After Rowling’s digital release, the book will be publishing in print in November. Rowling “thought how wonderful it would be if children in lockdown, or otherwise needing distraction during the strange and difficult time we are passing through, illustrated the story for [her].” Parents can post their children’s drawings on Twitter using the hashtag #TheIckabog, for a chance to have their artwork in the book!
Once published, all author royalties will be going to help fight COVID-19. We are over the moon excited to start reading later today! Stay tuned for Chapter 1!
