This morning on NPR, Dr. Vivek Murthy, the 19th Surgeon General of the United States, spoke about his new book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. Together addresses what Dr. Murthy calls a key, under-appreciated public health issue—loneliness—and offers solutions for strengthening our real-world connections to counteract the forces driving depression, violence, addiction, and political polarization.

As we continue to social distance to keep each other safe, the message of Together feels undeniably relevant. We are all feeling a little lonely right now, but Dr. Murthy’s parting words on his NPR interview are a beautiful message of confidence and hope: “We have the opportunity to use this moment to recenter our lives on people. And if we do that, then I believe we can come out of this pandemic more connected, more fulfilled and more resilient than before the pandemic began.”

Together is the perfect book to pick up if you need some help combating loneliness right now!
