A forgotten history. A secret network of women. A legacy of poison and revenge. Welcome to The Lost Apothecary.
This cross-century tale switches back and forth from the 18th century to present day, and features three women whose stories converge in a tale of revenge, secrets, and power.
It’s 1791 London, and hidden in a back alley is a secret apothecary shop. This shop caters to a very particular customer—specifically, women who want to be free from the oppressive men in their lives. Nella, who was once a healer, has now devoted her life to selling poisons to these women. There are two rules, however. First, the poisons cannot be used on another woman, and second, the names of the murderer and her victim must be recorded in Nella’s register. When 12-year-old Eliza Fanning shows up at the apothecary, events are set into motion that could possibly destroy everything Nella has worked for.
Fast forward to the present day, as would-be historian Caroline Pacewell spends her 10th wedding anniversary alone in London after she finds out that her husband is cheating on her. When she discovers a vial from the old apothecary in the Thames River, she starts an investigation that will link her to two women 200 years in the past.
