Interview with Melissa de La Cruz

Melissa de la Cruz

Author Melissa de la Cruz

We had a chance this week to ask Melissa de la Cruz our most burning questions. The New York Times best selling author of the hit young adult novel Isle of the Lost and its upcoming sequel, Return to the Isle of the Lost, opened up about her favorite Disney villains, the Descendants television movie, and more.

BAM: Who is your favorite Disney villain and why?
Melissa: Maleficent of course! First of all, she’s fabulous, dresses in all black, and is the Mistress of Darkness. What’s not to love?

BAM: Is there a character you would like to write about more in future books?
Melissa: It would be great to be able to write about Anna and Elsa, as I’m a huge Frozen fan!

BAM: The success of the movie Descendants was amazing. What was it like to work with Disney on this project and did you watch the Disney television movie?
Melissa: Yes, I was there when we filmed the Descendants, and I saw the early cuts of the film as I wrote my book. It was really fun to collaborate with Disney, I was given a lot of leeway in the restricted narrative space I was given in the story, so it was an interesting challenge but in that space I had the entire Disney universe. It was fun to be in that playground.

BAM: Many adults have read YA for years, but what did you think about the reception of The Isle of the Lost book and Descendants movie for both teens and adults?
Melissa: It just goes to show we are all Disney kids at heart, I heard the book really brought back people’s childhood to them – I’m so glad because it did that for me too!

BAM: What did you read when you were growing up?
Melissa: Everything. I was a voracious reader, from the classics like Little Women and Anne of Green Gables to fantasy, my favorites were Lord of the Rings and Dune. I wanted to name my kids Arwen Evenstar and Legolas Greenleaf.

BAM: Did your reading as a child influence what you read or write today?
Melissa: It definitely influenced who I became as a writer, as I write fantasy and I write for kids and teenagers, as that time of my reading life was the most intense for me.

BAM: Can you tell us about your next project and if there will be a third Descendants novel?
Melissa: Yes! Am working on the third one right now – this one leads up to the 2nd Descendants movie, with new characters we see in the movie. Can’t tell you more or Maleficent will hex me. 🙂
