Expert Pick: “Hero of the Empire” by Candice Millard
Reviewed by Jordan Weinmann, BAM Buyer
The History books I most enjoy are the ones that explore little known events and do so in a narrative format so it feels like you’re reading a novel. Candice Millard has that remarkable talent, shared with writers such as Erik Larson and Daniel James Brown. Before reading this book I knew next to nothing about the Boer War, and definitely did not know that Winston Churchill was involved. In fact, his exploits during this war gave him the recognition and the platform to later become Prime Minister. Millard gives us a thrilling tale of Churchill’s exploits during this war, which included his capture and imprisonment by the enemy soldiers. His incredible escape, and often arrogant actions, provide a captivating tale.
