Expert Pick: “Angel Catbird” by Margaret Atwood

Review Spencer Simpson

Angel CatbirdLiterary superstar Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale, Oryx and Crake) has put out a Graphic Novel (the first volume of an ongoing series) entitled Angel Catbird because, well, a geneticist accidentally spills his own concoction onto himself when an owl and a cat are nearby and these things just sort of happen. The book is absolutely charming from start to finish, gleefully reveling in the language and pacing of Sunday news strips but drawn and laid out in a modern albeit minimalist style by artist and collaborator Johnnie Christmas (Sheltered, Pisces) with wonderful poppy colors by Tamra Bonvillain (Rat Queens, Wayward). In addition, the book is peppered with cat puns, facts about pet cats and proceeds of the book go to the Nature Canada’s campaign www.catsandbirds.ca to keep pet cats and local bird populations safe.
