Nicola Yoon’s Top Ten DIVERSE Young Adult Book Titles
We recently had the opportunity to reach out to The Sun Is Also a Star author, Nicola Yoon and asked for her top ten list of YA titles, but not just any titles – diversity was key. Below are Yoon’s picks and her reasons why.
AN EMBER IN THE ASHES by Sabaa Tahir
Nicola: Epic with profound insights and fantastic world-building. EMBER is the first book in what is quickly becoming one of my favorite fantasy series of all time.
THE WRATH AND THE DAWN by Renee Ahdieh
Nicola: Gorgeously written love story of Shahrzad and Khalid. Not only will you fall in love with Ahdieh’s beautiful words, you will fall in love with the food. Don’t read this one while you’re hungry!
MORE HAPPY THAN NOT by Adam Silvera
Nicola: Imagine a world where you could forget the things that cause you pain. But what if that pain shapes an integral part of yourself? Silvera’s speculative novel about a boy struggling to come to terms with his identity and sexuality was one of my favorite books of 2015.
SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA by Becky Albertalli
Nicola: Charming and quirky and geeky and deeply observed. I smiled all the way through reading this book.
TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE by Jenny Han
Nicola: The story of what happens after Lara Jean Song’s secret love letters are mailed is charming and sweet and completely touching.
POINTE by Brandy Colbert
Nicola: A lovely and poignant meditation on growing up in the shadow of past mistakes and a complicated present.
IF I WAS YOUR GIRL by Meredith Russo
Nicola: A beautiful and honest coming-of-age story that explores issues of identity and sexuality. This novel is necessary, not only for trans teens, but all teens.
TINY PRETTY THINGS by Dhonielle Clayton & Sona Charaipotra
Nicola: A completely addictive, fun and heart-felt read that will immerse you in the world of competitive ballet. I couldn’t put this one down.
ALL AMERICAN BOYS by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Reich
Nicola: Fantastic story telling coupled with quiet and necessary truths combine to make ALL AMERICAN BOYS one of the books that I recommend to everyone I meet.
EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU by Nina LaCour
Nicola: Emi and Ava are meant to fall in love. Their love is so inevitable, sweet and real that we can’t help but fall along with them.

Be the first to read the dazzling new novel from Nicola Yoon, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything
Natasha: I m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won t be my story.
Daniel: I ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store for both of us.
The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?
